Eutrophication occurs when an ecosystem is saturated with essential non-organic nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, which under natural conditions would only normally be present in small concentrations. When released into water, these substances trigger outbreaks of algae and aquatic plants, which, in turn, leads to a shift in the biodiversity of the ecosystem.
The eutrophication potential of the nutrient input is determined in accordance with CML 2001 v3.9 and specified in kg (PO43- -eq (phosphate equivalent).
