The potential toxic effects of volatile compounds are usually increased by the introduction of halogens (especially chlorine). With chlorine as a constituent, new qualitative effects may often become apparent, and many organic compounds may thus become genotoxic (mutagenic) or carcinogenic. Therefore, a number of organochlorines are extremely toxic environmental contaminants. They are dangerous primarily due to their great chemical stability, their high solubility in fat, and their high toxicity.
The maximum admissible content of volatile organohalogen compounds (VOCs) is 0.1% by weight.
