2. 6. 1. Limits for biocides

description relevant product categories

minimum requirement

Biocidal active substances (hereinafter referred to as biocides) may only be used for in-can preservation for storage and transport. This also applies to biocides in preliminary products.

With the exception of BNPD, any formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers contained are not taken into account in the criterion "Limit values for biocides".

The preservation of the product must be dimensioned in such a way

    that the amount of each biocide contained in the product falls below the limit value stated in each case, regardless of whether it was added to the product or introduced through the use of preliminary products (binders, pigment pastes, dispersants, etc.),
    AND

    that the sum of all added biocides and biocides from precursors does not exceed the limit value of 400 ppm in the product

is not exceeded.

The following active substances may only be contained up to the specified maximum authorised levels

    ≤ 15 ppm CIT
    ≤ 15 ppm MIT
    ≤ 15 ppm CIT / MIT
    ≤ 80 ppm IPBC
    ≤ 200 ppm BNPD

    CIT = 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (CAS 26172-55-4)
    MIT = 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (CAS 2682-20-4)
    CIT / WITH (CAS 55965-84-9)
    IPBC = 3-iodo-2-propynyl butyl carbamate (CAS 55406-53-6)
    BNPD = 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol, bronopol (CAS 52-51-7)

Safety data sheet in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 as amended by Regulation (EU) No 453/2010, and manufacturer's confirmation.

In the case of powder plastering and spackle, this criterion is regarded as met.

All products bearing one of the following organic labels meet these criteria:

Change of criteria

Since May 1, 2020, products containing 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (CAS 2682-20-4), abbreviated MIT, from a concentration of 15 ppm, have been classified with hazard warning H317 (May cause allergic skin reaction). The sensitizing effect of chloromethylisothiazolinone (CIT) has also been well known for a long time.
The "ÖkoBauKriterien" (eco building criterion) "2.6.1 Limits for biocides" and "2. 6. 4. Ban of biocide use in facade plasters and paints" has been adapted to this situation and the use of CIT, MIT and CIT / MIT (3: 1) has been limited to 15 ppm.
The sum of the allowed preservatives was increased to 400 ppm. To simplify the criterion and also to resolve existing contradictions, the limitation to individual combinations of active ingredients has also been removed from the criterion.
